Xernel setup for Rust
Xernel for Rust runs from its own launcher before the game. System preparation — the driver command and the graphics overlay — is done once; after that you only need the launcher and the key.
Requirements
- Windows 10 or 11 (x64)
- An NVIDIA or AMD graphics card with its app installed and the overlay on
- Rust installed and run at least once
- Administrator rights on the computer
System requirements
Preparation
All of this is done once: turn off antivirus, run the driver command, enable the graphics overlay and restart. After that, launching only takes the launcher and the key.
Remove third-party antivirus and anti-cheats Kaspersky, Avast, ESET and the like, plus FaceIT and Riot Vanguard, conflict with the loader. They must be uninstalled, not just paused.

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Control Panel → Programs and Features).

Uninstall any third-party antivirus (Kaspersky, Avast, AVG, ESET, 360, Malwarebytes, etc.). Pausing or disabling is not enough — the antivirus driver stays resident.

Uninstall the FaceIT AC and Riot Vanguard anti-cheats if present — they block third-party software at the kernel level.
- FaceIT is the CS2 anti-cheat, Vanguard is the Valorant one. If you don't play those games, they are safe to remove.
After removing an antivirus, restart the PC — some of its services only unload after a reboot.
Fully disable Windows Defender The #1 cause of "it won't launch". Disable it for real: manually first, then remove it from startup, reboot, and finish it off with Defender Control.

Step 1. Turn protection off by hand. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage settings and switch every toggle off:
- Real-time protection — Off.
- Cloud-delivered protection — Off.
- Automatic sample submission — Off.
- Tamper Protection — Off. Turn this one off first, otherwise the others switch themselves back on.

Step 2. Disable reputation-based protection. In Windows Security → App & browser control → Reputation-based protection → Settings, turn everything off (SmartScreen, potentially-unwanted-app blocking).

Step 3. Remove Defender from startup. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → Startup apps tab, find Windows Security notification icon and click Disable.

Step 4. Restart your computer. This is mandatory — some Defender services only unload after a reboot.

Step 5. Finish with Defender Control. Download Defender Control (archive password: r1xon), run it as administrator and click Disable Windows Defender — the tile turns red.
- If your antivirus deletes the utility itself, protection is still active — go back to step 1. The file ships zipped on purpose so Defender can't wipe it before it's disabled.
Don't skip steps 3–4. "I turned the toggles off but it didn't help" almost always means Defender came back after restart because it was left in startup.
Turn off core isolation, the driver blocklist and VBS Three Windows protections block the product's driver. They are switched off by pasting the commands into an administrator Command Prompt — once, followed by a restart.

Press Win, type cmd and choose Run as administrator.

Paste all three commands at once and press Enter. Each should answer "The operation completed successfully".

Restart the computer — the changes don't apply until you do.
To turn the protections back on, run the same commands with /d 1 instead of /d 0.
Enable the NVIDIA or AMD overlay The product needs the graphics card overlay turned on — without it the menu doesn't show up and the game can go black. Set it up once, before running the launcher.

Check which graphics card you have: Win + R → dxdiag → the Display tab. The developer names two suitable overlays — NVIDIA and AMD.

NVIDIA. Install the NVIDIA App (or the older GeForce Experience) from NVIDIA's website.
- NVIDIA App: the gear icon Settings → Features → turn on NVIDIA Overlay.
- GeForce Experience: the gear icon Settings → General → turn on In-game overlay.
- Check: press Alt + Z on the desktop — the NVIDIA panel should open.

AMD. Install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition from AMD's website.
- The gear icon Settings → Preferences → turn on In-Game Overlay.
- Check: press Alt + R — the AMD panel should open.

Laptop with two GPUs. You need the overlay of the card the game runs on, usually the discrete one. In Settings → System → Display → Graphics set the game to High performance.

Just keep the overlay turned on — there's no need to open it in game. The Discord overlay does not work for the product, the legacy one included.
Black screen or the menu won't open — first check that the panel opens with Alt + Z (NVIDIA) or Alt + R (AMD).

Open the download page — download Xernel Launcher, enter your license key and wait for it to be processed. The download starts on its own within a few seconds; if not, click Manual download

Move the launcher from Downloads into its own folder, for example C:\XERNEL\. To leave no traces on the disk, you can keep it on a USB drive formatted as FAT32

Once the cards above are done, restart the computer: Win + R, type shutdown /r /t 0 and press Enter

Close Rust: the launcher can't be run while the game is open

Run the launcher as administrator

In the License activation window enter the key and click Activate — the launcher's main menu opens

Select Rust and click Launch. A window with launch logs opens — that's expected

Wait for authorisation. When asked "Load driver?", answer Yes on the first run after a restart and No on later runs until the next restart
- Pressing Yes every time breaks the product — then restart the computer and answer Yes once.

A beep sounds after the launcher closes — only then start Rust

In the main menu or once in the world press Delete — the product initialises and is ready
Problems & fixes
The launcher won't download
Check the Downloads folder — the file may already be there. Clear the browser cache (Ctrl + Shift + Delete), turn off the ad blocker and try another browser. The developer suggests retrying without a VPN, but if the site doesn't open with your ISP, turn a full VPN on instead. Make sure the key is active and not expired.
Invalid license key
Copy the whole key from the email or the bot without spaces at the ends, and don't type it by hand: 1, l and I are easy to mix up. Check it hasn't expired. If a correct key is still rejected, sync the Windows clock, restart and try again. If that fails, contact support with the key and the exact error text.
Antivirus still blocks the launcher
Turn off all antivirus software, Windows Defender included — actually disable real-time protection instead of just minimising the app to the tray. Add the launcher folder to exclusions and restart.
The game won't start after the launcher
Make sure the game is installed and starts on its own, there's free disk space and the graphics overlay is on. Start the game manually through its launcher or Steam. If that doesn't help, restart and repeat everything from the beginning.
Black screen in game
It's almost always the overlay: check that the NVIDIA or AMD overlay is on and opens with Alt + Z (NVIDIA) or Alt + R (AMD). The Discord overlay doesn't work for the product. Update the graphics driver and close screen recorders — OBS, Bandicam and the like.
The menu doesn't open on Delete
Press Delete once the game has loaded — in the main menu or in a match; on a laptop use Fn + Delete. Make sure the launcher finished its run and the graphics overlay is on.
The launcher hangs on the authorisation logs
It's usually the network. Check the connection and turn off the VPN if you use one, or try another connection — mobile internet, for example. Restart. If it keeps happening, delete the launcher files and download it again.
Low FPS or lag
Close unneeded programs and screen recorders and check Task Manager for anything else loading the system. Update the graphics driver and check temperatures — overheating looks the same.
The cheat stopped working on the account
First check the product status: after a game update you have to wait for the cheat update. If the status is fine and only one account is affected, the developer says it's a shadow ban — from reports or an earlier detection. It lifts after 24 hours.
The driver won't load or driver load failed -1
1. Fully disable Windows Defender and third-party antivirus (Kaspersky, Dr.Web and others).
2. Uninstall the FACEIT AC and Riot Vanguard anti-cheats along with their leftovers.
3. Make sure the preparation command ran: in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CI\Config the VulnerableDriverBlocklistEnable value must be 0.
4. Restart the computer and launch again.
If that doesn't help, run R1XON Checker and fix the red items.
Pressed "Yes" several times, now it doesn't work
The driver loads once per session, so this is expected. Restart the computer and answer Yes only once after the restart. If that doesn't help, boot into Safe Mode and roll back with System Restore to a point before the problem, or reinstall the launcher.
Advanced setup — only if it still won’t launch
Use a VPN for download and activation CIS ISPs often block the activation servers. A VPN is needed while downloading the loader, activating the key and injecting — you can turn it off before joining a match.

Use a full VPN (an app that routes all traffic), not a browser proxy, VLESS or extension — half the support tickets come from exactly this.

Turn the VPN on before downloading the loader and activating the key. If something won't load, switch country (Europe or the US usually work).

After a successful inject you can turn the VPN off before the match to avoid extra ping.
A VPN fixes most endless-loading and "key won't activate" problems.
Update Visual C++ and DirectX Up-to-date runtimes keep the loader and overlay from crashing at start.

Install Visual C++ Redistributable x64 and restart the PC.

FAQ
Where do I get the key after payment?
The key arrives instantly after payment — it appears on the order page and lands in your email, and if Telegram is linked to your account, our bot sends a copy too. This guide opens from there as well.
Which key opens the menu?
The menu opens on Delete (Fn + Delete on a laptop) once the game has loaded. You can rebind it in the menu itself.
Do I have to repeat the preparation every time?
No. The command and the overlay are set up once. After that the launch is: launcher → key → Rust → Yes to the driver prompt on the first run after a restart → game.
Can I start the product with the game already open?
No. Fully close Rust first, then run the launcher.
Why is the graphics overlay needed?
The developer requires the NVIDIA or AMD overlay to be on: without it parts of the product don't work and the game can go black. The Discord overlay doesn't count. How to enable it is in the "Enable the NVIDIA or AMD overlay" card in preparation.
Do I need to turn off Defender if I have another antivirus?
Yes, turn off both: Defender and a third-party antivirus get in the product's way even together.
How do I turn the Windows protections back on?
Run the same commands with the value 1 in an administrator Command Prompt:
